Corona Virus popularly known as COVID 19 is a recent and current epidemic outbreak. The scientific name of Corona is “Orthocoronavirinae” which belongs to SARS family. The first case of corona was identified in Wuhan in China in 2019 and in very short span it has an outbreak and spread all around the world. The range of Corona virus is around 26 to 32 Kilobases and it is identified as one of the largest among the RNA Viruses. As far as 2020 45 species are officially identified from Coronaviridae family.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are Fever, Dry Cough and Fatigue. Other symptoms also include loss of taste and smell, Sore throat, Headache, Fever, chills etc. Severe symptoms include Shortness of breath, pressure in chest and sometimes its fatal. People above age of 60 and having other health complications have been severely affected by this and there is no evidence that other age groups have fewer complications.
Corona is mainly diagnosed by using molecular test and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is done in most cases to confirm infection. Samples are collected from mouth and throat swabs. The incubation period is observed as 2-14 days from day of infected. Rapid Antigen Tests are also done to get the results quickly than PCR test. Patients with positive Covid-19 are sent to isolation for 14 days to prevent the spread of virus. Primary and secondary contacts of positive patients are sent to quarantine for a week and tested.By 2020 December it is identified as nearly 80 Million people has infected with COVID 19, and deaths more than 1.7million. As far as 2020 3 vaccines has been developed and their safety and efficacy results are awaited for approvals. It is observed than a new strain of COVID 19 has been identified in UK in late December 2020.
